What is needed for your life to move forward?

Most of the time, the reason your life isn't moving the way you want it to isn't that you lack some crucial ability or piece of information. It's that something about your current situation - internal, external, or both - isn't clear enough yet for the next step to emerge.

The main aim of my coaching practice is to help you find that next step. I do this by helping you to be present with the whole of your experience and situation. Most stuckness results from avoiding some aspect of your experience or imposing an idea of what should be happening that doesn't fit. When you can really be where you are without trying to change or get away from it, the next movement that's needed usually becomes clear or even happens on its own.

You Don't Have to Change Who You Are

The patterns that cause you the most difficulty are often intimately connected to the deepest aspects of who you are - your sensitivity, your intensity, your particular way of engaging with the world. These aren't flaws to be fixed. They're expressions of something essential in you, with patterns of struggle wrapped up in them.

Those struggles can shift and unwind, but not through trying to become someone else. What actually works is a shift in how you relate to your patterns - learning to see them clearly without being limited to them, and opening to the wisdom they carry even when they're causing you pain.

This starts from self-acceptance, not as a static destination, but as the ground from which real movement becomes possible. When you can accept where you actually are, you can feel what's needed next - whether that's sitting with something difficult, healing an old wound, or taking action you've been avoiding. Change happens, but it flows from being willing to be where you are, not from rejecting yourself to get somewhere else.

Why Hire a Coach?

The mind is vast, and inner work can be complicated, confusing, and overwhelming to do on your own. The biggest challenge isn't a lack of skill - it's that the territory near your actual growth edge is where things get emotionally intense, where confusion thickens, where the ground feels uncertain. That's also where the most important shifts tend to happen.

One thing I bring to our work is familiarity and comfort with that territory. I've spent about 15,000 hours in contemplative practice and about 5,000 hours facilitating others. This let's me support you in staying present with what's happening at your edge rather than retreating from it or trying to force your way through it. I don't do the work for you, but I make the territory navigable enough for you to both make progress and learn to find your own way at the same time.

What Working With Me Looks Like

Sessions are conversational and follow what's alive for you right now. We might clarify goals, understand resistance and inner conflict, sit with intense emotions, practice introspection, or just be with whatever arises. The specifics depend on where you are, but we will always come back to the question of what is really needed next.

My approach draws on both systematic methods and the development of a general intuitive capacity  (the "sense of fit" that Gendlin describes in his Focusing work). We can start from either side and develop whatever new pieces will be most helpful for where you're currently at. If you've already developed your intuitive capacity and have trust in it, we can let that guide our process and introduce specific methods as refinements. If you find the idea of developing technical skills empowering or intriguing, I can teach several frameworks of introspection that have great depth and generality. Even intuition can be developed as a technical skill. The most powerful processes integrate both approaches.

We may be a good fit if:

  • You feel stuck in some persistent way and are open to finding an unexpected path forward

  • You want to be more present with the whole of your experience and context

  • You want to become more comfortable with confusion, uncertainty, and nebulosity

  • You want to develop or deepen an introspective or meditative practice

  • You want to develop your intuition or integrate it with systematic thinking

We're probably not a great fit if:

  • You need a specific outcome on a specific timeline - my approach requires openness to unexpected directions

  • You mostly want help with discipline - honestly I don't know much about discipline from my direct experience

  • You want someone to tell you what to do - I help you find your own way

I offer a free 1-hour intro session where we can actually try out working with each other to get a sense of whether we're a good fit. After that, I charge on a sliding scale from $100–$150/hour. You pick what you're comfortable with, no questions asked.

If you'd like to schedule a session or ask me some questions, send me an email at jasen.murray@gmail.com or fill out the form below.
